SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated is coming to mobile devices iOS and Android later this month.
SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom originally released in 2003 for PC, PS2, Xbox and GameCube. However in 2020 it received a remaster for PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
As well as featuring higher resolution visuals, increased framerate and updated controls, the remaster also featured a new multiplayer horde mode in which players faced waves of enemies before battling it out against a boss.
While fans were happy to see this beloved platformer receive a modern remaster I don’t think even the most dedicated of fans expected a mobile release.
The news of the port coming to mobile was announced earlier this month by publisher HandyGames on Twitter with an accompanying gameplay video.
At first I was dubious about the video as it featured Xbox controller button prompts, but apparently the footage in the trailer is captured while playing with an Xbox controller.
The publisher has also confirmed that this mobile port will have no hidden paywalls or microtransaction as detailed in the overview of the game below:
“After the outstanding success of SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated on PC and consoles, THQ Nordic family member HandyGames teamed up with Nickelodeon to bring this unique experience to iOS and Android as a premium title without microtransactions or any hidden paywalls. You pay once and play the full game to your heart’s content.”
Developed by Purple Lamp Studios, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated will release via the App Store and Google Play on January 21st for $8.99 (around £7).
