It has been revealed that it will cost you £90/$100 to access the FIFA 22 next-gen upgrade on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
As long as you upgrade within a set time, players were able to upgrade their copies of FIFA 21 to the next-gen version at no extra cost. Unfortunately, that is not the case with this year’s FIFA 22.
As reported by Eurogamer, if you want to gain access to the next-gen upgrade then you will have to buy the Ultimate Edition for £89.99/$99.99. If you purchase the standard edition which has an RRP of £59.99/$69.99 on PS4 or Xbox One, there will be no free upgrade for you.
So, if you are a last-gen gamer and you know you will pick up a new console at some point, you must buy the Ultimate Edition if you want to play an enhanced version of FIFA 22. That is unless you buy a standard edition for each generation.
You can of course still play your last-gen copy of FIFA 22 via backward compatibility, but then you will be missing out on the snazzy next-gen game mechanic that EA is calling “HyperMotion technology”.
EA says Dual Entitlement is back for FIFA 22.

But it’s not. Not really.
Dual Entitlement previously let PS4/Xbox One standard edition buyers get a free copy of the next-gen PS5/Series X|S version for no extra charge.https://t.co/WfQa6ti3x9
What is HyperMotion Technology?
Essentially, HyperMotion technology is next-gen player animations. HyperMotion will rewrite animations in real-time during a game to make for a more realistic experience. It all sounds very impressive on paper.
Player AI is also said to be vastly improved in FIFA 22 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. EA claims that players will “make up to 6x more decisions per second,” giving the impression that AI players have more natural instincts.
So, if you play a last-gen version of FIFA 22 on a new-gen console, you will miss out on the fancy new features. Consequently, players will have to buy the Ultimate Edition if they want to play the best version of the game at a later date.
I haven’t got a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, should I buy the standard edition?

Look at it this way, if you’re currently a last-gen player, EA is essentially charging £30/$30 for a next-gen upgrade.
That said, it might be worth holding out on buying the standard edition of FIFA 22 until you get your new console. In my opinion. That is unless you really want the Ultimate Edition at launch.
“Dual Entitlement is only available with the purchase of the FIFA 22 Ultimate Edition. The Standard Edition of FIFA 22 does not include Dual Entitlement.

If you purchase FIFA 22 Standard Edition on PS4 and upgrade to PS5 later, you need to purchase the PS5 version to play.”

FIFA 21 will release for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Google Stadia on October 1st, 2021. However, if you buy the Ultimate Edition, you can play the game four days earlier on September 27th. Rejoice.
